Many people in the world are extremely poor. They cannot afford the basic necessities of life for themselves and their children, food, clothing, shelter, health care, education. Extreme poverty mainly exists in the third world countries, developing, or undeveloped countries.

In 2004 the number of people living on less than US $1 a day was 980 million.

The current trend is improving. The number extream poor is down from 1.25 billion in 1990. The proportion of people living in extreme poverty fell 19 percent in this period.
